The more contagious COVID variant landed just in time for the holiday season, leading to a wild rush on COVID tests. Rapid tests disappeared from store shelves under extreme demand while online purchases were backordered. It would take days or longer to get an appointment at a local pharmacy or other test provider, if one was available at all, for a PCR test.
