Dale Earnhardt's death at the 2001 Daytona 500 was a moment fans still remember with painful clarity.

On Feb. 18, 2001 in Daytona Beach, Fla., seven-time NASCAR champion and enormously popular 76-race winner Dale Earnhardt died in the Daytona 500.To them, that wasFor millions of music fans Feb. 3, 1959 stands among their saddest days. In a cornfield near Clear Lake, Iowa, a four-seat, single-engine plane crashed on takeoff, killing pilot Roger Peterson and rock superstars Buddy Holley, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson.

For more than a quarter-century he had been NASCAR’s rough-hewn, blue-collar, unapologetic, intimidating hero with a well-hidden heart of gold. People who didn’t follow stock car racing nevertheless knew of this undereducated but bright athlete from Kannapolis, N.C. His death notice appeared on Page 1 of theand his cover photo and account of his death were highlighted in several national publications includingEarnhardt died while running third on the last lap of the 200-lap race.

Words of condolence came from fans in every state and from a dozen foreign countries. His funeral was telecast on two networks, and some newspapers published special Earnhardt commemorative sections that week. It was the only thing people in motorsports talked about for almost a month. Mainstream America was paying attention to NASCAR.

Earnhardt's was the fourth on-track death in the preceding nine months, following Adam Petty in May 2000 and Kenny Irwin in July 2000 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Tony Roper in October 2000 at Texas Motor Speedway. In coming months, NASCAR began upgrading its safety standards, mandating head-and-neck restraint devices, development of soft walls and, ultimately, the safety-focused Car of Tomorrow. There hasn't been an on-track death since Earnhardt's.
