If you live in Ohio, the term “buckeye” is ubiquitous. Besides its prominence as a university mascot or facsimile confection of chocolate and peanut butter, the buckeye is, in fact, an interesting ornamental tree. Buckeyes are actually a small group of deciduous trees found in many areas of the world., has served as our official state tree. This species is native to Ohio as well as areas of the central and eastern U.S.
—is also native. Yellow buckeye grows larger but has a similar form, leaf and flower. Some buckeye trees currently on the market are hybrids of North American and European species.One of the smaller buckeye species, Ohio buckeye ranges from 20 to 40 feet high and wide. This heavily foliated tree provides deep shade. Its distinctive leaves are palmately compound, with five to seven leaflets radiating from a single petiole .
Emerging in early to mid-May, upright flower panicles bear fragrant yellow-green blooms with orange throats. Following bloom, leathery fruits develop. These husks contain the coveted large shiny seeds, or buckeyes. Dark brown with a tan center, the seeds resemble the eye of a male deer, hence the popular name.Native plant:As a landscape tree, Ohio buckeye serves best in large yards, parks and woodland edges. They tolerate wet sites but do less well in dry ones.
