NATO extended the mandate of Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who has won praise from the Trump administration

BRUSSELS—NATO said Thursday it had extended until 2022 the mandate of Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who has won praise from the Trump administration for his efforts encouraging allies to spend more on defense.

Mr. Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister who became the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s top civilian official in 2014, has shepherded the 29-member alliance’s response to both Russian belligerence and broadsides from President Trump over weak spending.
