NATO believes that Russia may have already lost as much as one-fifth of its combat forces during the first month of the invasion of Ukraine.
A senior NATO military official said that as many as 40,000 Russian troops have been killed, wounded, taken prisoner, or are missing, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, while another official told the outlet that Russia may have lost as much as 10% of its equipment already. NATO also estimates that somewhere between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.
The Kremlin hasn’t updated its casualty tally since March 2, when it noted that just short of 500 troops had died in Ukraine.
