Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called the protest by Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville “unnecessary” and “unsafe” as three branches are led by interim officials.
In response to the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Defense department said in February that it would allow up to three weeks of administrative leave for service members and dependents forced to travel for an abortion, as many of the states with the most restrictive reproductive laws are home to major military bases. Tuberville has argued the policy is a misuse of government funding. President Joe Biden has argued that the blocked nominations jeopardize U.S.
Traditionally, nominees are confirmed in the Senate through a unanimous vote by the Armed Services Committee.Tuberville's office said in a statement that the hold is not affecting military readiness since acting officials are serving in the vacant roles, and added that the senator is"not blocking votes—he’s forcing votes," noting that the Senate could still confirm the nominees through lengthy floor votes.More vacancies.
