Those ping pong balls have mattered before to rebuilding NBA teams looking to reinvigorate their fan bases with the coveted No. 1 pick. But this year is different because former Duke superstar and presumptive No. 1 pick Zion Williamson projects as a perennial All-Star and potential top-five player in the league.
"He is the most talked about guy in a long time," Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said on his HBO show The Shop. The New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers all have a 14% chance of landing the top pick, while the Chicago Bulls , Atlanta Hawks , and Washington Wizards are also in the running among 14 teams in a new lottery system the NBA designed to discourage tanking. The consolation for landing the No. 2 or No. 3 pick isn't bad, either, with Williamson's Duke teammate R.J. Barrett and Murray State’s Ja Morant both All-Star caliber prospects.
And the team with the worst record used to be guaranteed to receive no worse than the fourth pick . After those picks, the remaining teams were ordered in the inverse of their regular-season records. Instead now the first four picks will be decided by the lottery draw. That means the team with the worst record will receive no worse than the fifth pick.
