FAIRFAX, Va. — The most dominant program in the history of NCAA men’s volleyball is one win from ending its longest drought and adding to its overstuffed trophy case.
The Bruins outhit LBSU .458 to .232 to secure their 27th trip to the title match on Saturday in the quest for the program’s 20th NCAA title but the first since 2006. It marked the 17th match this season in which UCLA, which led the nation in hitting percentage during the regular season, has hit .400 or better.
Sophomore opposite hitter Ido David paced the Bruins on Thursday with 17 kills while hitting .625. Junior outside hitter Ethan Champlin added 14 kills, two aces and hit .619. The 3-0 sweep was the 21st of the season for the Bruins and the most by a UCLA team since the 1995 squad recorded a program-record 25 on its way to a national title. UCLA’s 30th win of the season is the most since that 1995 team went 31-1.
UCLA had a 10-7 lead in the first set but three kills from Ethan Champlin helped extend the lead to 13-9. LBSU closed to within 16-13, but an ace from Alex Knight gave UCLA a 20-14 advantage and Champlin and David had back-to-back kills to cap a 5-0 run for a 23-14 lead. Champlin’s sixth kill of the frame led to set point, then a Long Beach service error ended the set.
