Jonathan Wilkinson, formerly the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, spoke on resource development and environmental protection.
However, Wilkinson said he’s seen projections that suggest global demand for oil will fall to about a quarter of current levels by 2050; the oil that is pumped out of the ground will instead be used in applications where it doesn’t generate emissions, such as lubricants or in hydrogen production.
Asked about how plans for a green economy will help create Western Canadian jobs, Wilkinson noted many skills in existing industries are transferrable, pointing out for example that engineers in oil and gas already have the skills to work in producing biofuels.Article content That said, Wilkinson also called for continued progress getting the industry to clean up its emissions, noting it’s the single biggest emitter in Canada.
