Netflix does not pay residuals to South Korean actors despite the streaming service's massive hit series like Squid Game and The Glory.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Netflix does not pay residuals to South Korean actors despite massive hits like Squid Game and The Glory. In recent years, the streaming service has been expanding its library of original South Korean content with shows like Squid Game, which was released in 2021 and remains its most-watched series ever. Earlier this year, Netflix announced a major expansion to its Korean movies and shows slate for 2023.
Now, as the SAG-AFTRA strike continues in part due to low residual pay, a report from the Los Angeles Times reveals that Netflix does not pay residuals at all to South Korean actors. Song Chang-gon, an actor and current president of the Korea Broadcasting Actors Union, says Netflix refuses to meet with the union regarding their members receiving residuals, which is a form of royalty paid to talent after a show's initial release.
One of their first priorities when entering the local market should be to establish some channel of communication with groups like us. But there’s no answer at all... The problem is that Netflix’s big production budgets aren’t evenly distributed — most of this money goes to the star actors or big-name screenwriters. For the majority of supporting actors, wages have stagnated or effectively decreased...
Shoots for Netflix originals, especially genres like zombies or creature features, are far more labor-intensive. Actors are still expected to show up for however many shoots it takes to film one episode without enough additional compensation... There is undoubtedly common ground that can be found between us and SAG-AFTRA. It would be helpful for similar organizations representing actors around the world to engage with one another, to build up a sense of solidarity. I think that’s important.
Why Netflix Doesn't Pay Residuals To South Korean Actors A Netflix spokesperson declined to respond to the report and say whether the company would meet with the Korea Broadcasting Actors Union and discuss residual pay. In a written statement, Netflix did specify they are acting in accordance with all local laws and regulations in South Korea.
