What a moment. Drew Maggi played 1,155 minor league baseball games before getting the chance to make his pro debut.
PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Drew Maggi is well-traveled over the course of his 13-year professional baseball career.
But that all changed on Wednesday when the 33-year-old made his Major League Baseball debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers after the PiratesMaggi pinch-hit in front of the Pirates home crowd on Wednesday with his family in attendance and near tears. The ovation he received from Pirates fans paused action for a second as both teams allowed Maggi to soak the moment in.
“I can’t explain how I was feeling in the box. I didn’t even know what to do. You guys were cheering me on. I never expected that,” Maggi said in aon the field. “Through the journey, I thought I’d make my debut and it’d be a normal at-bat, obviously special, but the crowd cheering my name, I got my parents here, my three brothers, sister back at home. This is unbelievable. Thank you everybody.”“I saw my dad crying. I don’t think I ever saw him cry before,” Maggi said.
Maggi, who was promoted to MLB by the Minnesota Twins in 2021 but never actually played, was asked what he’ll take away from his debut after Wednesday’s game.
