Newark Airport's new Terminal A — featuring wide open spaces and Jersey-centric public art — will welcome its first passengers in a few weeks, officials said at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
“In every corner, Terminal A honors our history and our future,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during ribbon cutting ceremony. “It’s hard not to walk in and say, ‘This is Newark Liberty? Yes this is Newark Liberty.”
A sneak preview tour for NJ Advance Media last Thursday showed what travelers can look forward to in the new 1-million-square-foot terminal. Huntley Lawrence, the authority’s chief operating officer and head of aviation guided the exclusive tour, starting in the old terminal to show why it needed replacement.
The old terminal was modernized in the 90′s with the addition of elevators, a TSA screening area and other feature needed to keep it current. But, there was no room for it to grow and handle increasing passenger volumes. Video signs end the frustrating hunt for parking by displaying how many of Conrac’s spaces are available in each lane in real time.
Bigger also means the new terminal can accommodate any size aircraft at any gate, including a Boeing 787 and other large transcontinental aircraft, Lawrence said That theme continues with a massive, but not overpowering, mural in the back of the ground level floor paying tribute to New Jerseyans, including some unsung individuals who’ve spent their careers working at Newark Airport. A committee that included the Newark Museum had a role in selecting the people enshrined in the mural.
The new terminal was designed to be versatile, with more resources that can be redeployed as passenger volume and travel patterns demand. There are six pods of 12 counters each for a total of 72 staffed check-in counters. All 21 counties were invited to submit photos to represent their county and First Lady Tammy Murphy was involved in the art curation, Lawrence said.
Travelers also will encounter a free standing high resolution video art installation that display Jersey-centric quizzes and facts about science and technology. Back inside, there are plenty of places to sit that range from the whimsical – ergonomic wood seating areas and lounge chairs that are evocative of a cross between beach lounges and Adirondack chairs — to more standard seating that have device charging stations underneath. They’re set up for USC ports, USB and power plugs for laptops.
