There were some 300 Native languages spoken when Europeans arrived to what is now America, but it's estimated only about 167 are still around today.
Native languages across the country are on the edge of extinction. A report issued this year by the Bureau of Indian Affairs says the country may be down to fewer than two dozen by 2050. One tribe is using new technology to keep their language alive for the next generation.
However, tribal leaders estimate there are fewer than 40 first-language speakers in the entire country. Elliot Garvin, age 75, is one of them. Today, a review by the Bureau of Indian Affairs estimates there are about 167. But that number could drop to only 20 by the year 2050. The report blames decades of efforts by the U.S. government to force assimilation, including setting up schools where Native languages were banned, and policies that sent Indians to urban centers away from their culture.
