The great thing about patents is they show where a company may be heading. The bad thing is they don’t say when.
Of course, there’s much more to it than that. The patent goes on, “A display stack include operations, techniques, and constructions such as, but not limited to: locally reducing pixel density of a display stack above an imaging aperture; locally altering a pixel or subpixel distribution pattern or arrangement above an imaging aperture; locally altering an electronic trace distribution…” No, I can’t put you through any more of this dry legal-ese. Take it from me there’s a lot more detail here.
It does specify that the through-display camera could be used for “fingerprint imaging, iris imaging, face recognition, and so on”.Intriguingly, it also mentions image capture, suggesting that Apple may replace the front-facing camera entirely with this new camera, assuming it feels it can generate decent picture quality, presumably. For sure, Apple will also want to be certain that this kind of facial recognition is at least as secure as the current Face ID.
Other phone manufacturers have replaced notches with holepunch cameras, but they tend not to be able to match the security of Face ID. And while under-display cameras on phones do exist, they’re not yet considered great quality.
