New Astros GM Dana Brown on long-term deals: 'I'm going to be aggressive'
With the Astros heading to spring training next week, new general manager Dana Brown shared some of his philosophies during Thursday's annual media luncheon at Minute Maid Park.Dana Brown is in Houston because of a broken relationship. Jim Crane and James Click grew distant due to personality differences, foremost among them a perceived lack of aggression from a first-time general manager groomed in a penny-pinching front office.
Crane has long loathed long-term contracts. No player in his ownership tenure has received anything longer than a six-year extension. Josh Reddick’s four-year deal prior to the 2017 season remains the longest given to a domestic free agent. Brown brought a different outlook. He’s still building a relationship with Crane but often calls their dynamic a “perfect storm.”
Brown will travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday with retention as his foremost spring training objective. On Thursday, he said the Astros are in talks with “multiple players and their agents” and the club is “getting closer to some of our guys.” Without naming anyone, Brown cited expiring contracts in 2024 as a priority.
In Brown’s estimation, that’s where contract extensions begin. He came from an Atlanta Braves front office that prioritized young players without much major league service time. Ronald Acuña Jr, Michael Harris and Spencer Strider all signed extensions without a full season of major league service time. Newly acquired catcher Sean Murphy signed an extension before reaching salary arbitration.
