A featherweight racing shoe that’s designed to handle a road mile—and not much more.
The 5280 is a very purpose-driven model, designed for one task—the road mile. It’s essentially a track spike, without the metal pins, but includes the extra cushioning you need to hammer fast on rock-hard roads.
From there, the athletes compress the spongy foam, which New Balance is mum about what material it’s using. The midsole is squishy and bouncy, much like the Pebax used in the Vaporfly and in Reebok’s Floatride Run Fast. But it has a rubbery feeling that those other shoes don’t. In any case, it’s extremely soft on landing but has a pop when you are at top speed.
And, of course, there’s the carbon fiber plate. New Balance took a different approach for this shoe, using unidirectional fibers. What that means is the plate can twist and bend laterally—side to side—but is rigid from heel to toe. That creates a stiff lever for the runner to generate even more power with every stride, but still allows them to land smoothly and pronate onto their forefoot.
