But they always say, you never know what’s around the corner.
“There is more to his story than just the wartime stuff — which, on its own, is fascinating,” Driver says. “He’s 101 years old, he has an incredible memory, and he’s a great storyteller. Decades from now, people can pick up this book and hear about what things were like from the perspective of a Prairie farm kid who decided he wanted to get up in the air and fly.”
During Harrison’s time overseas, that goal would be tested to the limits: engine failures, dangerous storms, exploding bombs and friendly fire that ultimately led to Many people — Driver included — consider Harrison a Canadian hero, but Harrison himself has never claimed the term. “I’d tell him, ‘I don’t know Jean, I don’t know what to say,’ ” he recalls. “And Buddy would say, ‘Well, say something.’ ”— while Harrison was recovering from a separate, nearly-fatal crash of his own. Harrison made a point of meeting Jean in person when he returned to Canada. The unlikely pair soon fell in love, and were married for 43 years until Jean’s death.
Whenever he visits schools, he makes a point of sharing his pride in being Canadian, encouraging young students to take an active role in shaping the country’s future.“I try to tell them the importance of remembering, because people seem to forget that Canada is a free country,” he says. “We have the opportunity to elect the kind of government we want; and then, of course we have elections. So if we don’t like the way they’ve been treating us, we can turf them out.
