It was less than a week ago when Nancy Marks, Rep. George Santos’ former campaign treasurer, pleaded guilty in connection with the criminal case against the Republican congressman. Rep. Dan Goldman, a former federal prosecutor, responded to the developments via social media, noting that this was “very bad for George Santos.” The Democratic lawmaker added that it seemed likely that the scandal plagued New Yorker would soon face additional charges. As it turns out, that’s precisely what happened.

“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,” Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement. “Santos falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen.
