New Dallas County judge still owes more than $42,000 in ethics fines | Opinion

Dallas County has a new misdemeanor court judge. On Saturday, Democrat Marilynn Mayse was sworn in as the new judge of County Criminal Court No. 1.Mayse still owes the Texas Ethics Commission $42,350. As we’ve noted several times in the last year, these ongoing, unpaid fines stem from years of unsuccessful bids to seek public office and failing to timely file campaign finance reports.

This isn’t just troubling; it’s discouraging. Judges in particular should be held to the highest standards, since they take an oath to uphold the law in their courtrooms every day. Mayse isn’t the only local judge with unpaid fines. Dallas County judges Lela Mays and Audra Riley, both Democrats, each owe $500. Mays did not respond to a request for comment sent through her court coordinator. Riley said she thought her fine, stemming back to 2019, was resolved and said she would take care of it.
