Disney announces a brand new live-action princess musical set in India from Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, who is also co-writing.
Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha is developing a live-action Disney Princess film set in India. During the Disney Renaissance, the studio began making feature films that focused on more diverse characters starting with Pocahontas with their Powhatan lead and Mulan with a Chinese character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Disney recently announced that a new princess would be introduced, albeit in a live-action capacity. Exclusively from Deadline, it was announced that the studio intends to develop a feature film that will be a musical set in India and feature a princess character in the lead. Chadha will direct the feature and co-write the script with her frequent writing partner Paul Mayeda Berges who helped out on Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice.
With the film planned to be set in India, there is the possibility that the movie will borrow tropes and themes that are commonly found in Bollywood musicals. Disney has recently tried to avoid repeating the older Disney princess tropes by acknowledging them and making jokes. The Indian setting suggests that this idea could continue, but with a lean towards Indian culture.
The untitled movie continues to push Disney's new mission to tell diverse stories with progressive filmmakers. Currently, the next Disney Princess movie is the animated film Wish which is set to feature a Latina princess in the lead. There are rumors of the studio looking to adapt the classic fable The Princess and the Pea. Whatever Disney's plans are, there is no shortage of where they intend to take their audience and what characters they hope to add to their collective minds.
