The new state law about safely passing bikes and pedestrians debuts Tuesday.

But hours before the Safe Passing law was scheduled to go into effect on March 1, there wasn’t as much to remind drivers of the coming change. That education and awareness campaign is coming, said Debra Kagan,The law is supposed to be fairly straight forward, using the state’s “Move Over Law” as a blueprint.
In addition to people on bikes, the law also covers pedestrians who have no choice except to walk in rural and suburban roads where there are no sidewalks, people riding skateboards and people with mobility issues using electric scooters. “We are currently working with numerous state agencies, safety organizations and advocates to create a public awareness and education campaign,” Kagan said. “The first phase of the campaign will launch in May.”, state Department of Transportation, the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University and other organizations are working with the coalition help launch the education campaign, she said.
