An interview with new Pearland ISD superintendent Larry Berger
Recently, when a group of Pearland ISD middle school students began acting up on their bus, rendering it difficult for the driver to do her job, Larry Berger decided to take a little trip., Berger boarded the bus and explained to the mischief-Makers how things were going to go.
On April 12, Berger was officially named superintendent, replacing retiring John Kelly after an internal search for candidates in which BergerTrustee Crystal Carbone, called Berger a “servant leader” and said he’s affectionately known as the district’s “Captain America.” In the short time he’s been on the job, Berger has chatted with kids during lunch and popped into classes to check out student learning and ensure they know who he is. His appearances also give him a chance to offer support to teachers and staff.
On the flip side, Berger said the district should recognize what didn’t work, such as teachers trying to handle both online and in-person students at the same time.“We have to have that connection to the kids and make sure we’re supporting them, and you can’t always do that through a screen,” Berger said.
Berger knows other factors impact finances as well, including Pearland’s high cost of housing and lack of land for new homes, all of which have contributed to a stagnant student population. To counter these effects, Berger has some ideas.
“Teachers don’t teach for the pay; so we know there are other reasons why they are here, and we have to re-engage with teachers on their reasons,” he said. “We have to examine what barriers we’ve created to them fulfilling their reasons for teaching and remove those barriers. We have to provide a safe, consistent and emotionally constant environment.
