The Rev. James H. Brooks, who died earlier this month, is remembered as a 'trailblazer' who had a 'golden voice.'
The Rev. James H. Brooks, pastor of New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Birmingham since 2007, was remembered by politicians, friends, family and church members today for his leadership.“He was kind, sincere and a gentle giant,” said the Rev. Robert Blythe, mayor of Richmond, Ky., and pastor of First Baptist Church of Richmond, who gave the eulogy at Brooks’ funeral on Wednesday afternoon.
Blythe said Brooks’ faith sustained him and those around him through difficult health issues as he faced death. “He said, ‘I’m going home to be with the Lord,’” Blythe said. “His faith was real; his hope was real.”“Dr. Brooks was a trailblazer in the African-American community,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said in a proclamation that was read at Brooks’ memorial service. “We salute the life of a man whose legacy will never be forgotten.
“We want a family life center that runs healthy programs for not just our church family but the whole community,” Brooks told The Birmingham News at the time the family life center opened. Brooks, a valedictorian at Madison High School in 1983, had a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion from Eastern Kentucky University and a master’s degree and doctoral degree in education from the University of Kentucky. Before coming to Birmingham, he was pastor of Second Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan, from 2001-2007 and Broadway Baptist Church in Winchester, Ky., from 1994-2001.
