Port Authority officials plan to build a new Northeast Corridor line rail station to serve Newark's South Ward.
, will get a rail station sooner and not have to wait for the larger project to be funded and built.
The PATH Rail Extension, as proposed in the authority’s 2017-2026 Capital Plan, relies on over $700 million in grants that have yet to be secured, officials said. The EWR Station Access Project is preliminarily estimated to cost $125 million. That figure could change after preliminary design work is done and cost estimates refined.
At that time, Port Authority officials said the South Ward station could be built across the tracks from the NJ Transit airport station near Weequahic Park. The station access project would provide more direct access to the airport and New York City for South Ward residents and would be provide the ability to get there faster than they can now, officials said. Currently, Newark and Elizabeth residents can spend about 40-minutes to reach the airport by bus.
