The federally-funded study could help local policymakers understand and mitigate climate change's impacts to the region's water supplies.

A researcher at the SAWS H2Oaks facility conducts a test in the facility's laboratory in June. The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment will receive $2 million to study the effects of climate change on the region's water resources. In the throes of what could become Texas’ hottest summer on record, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett announced $2 million in federal funding for a new study that will look at how climate change is affecting Central Texas’ water resources.

The goal of the project will be to offer local policymakers “the hard facts they need” to ensure continued access to the water Texans need, even as climate change makes that access more difficult and costly, said Doggett at a press conference Monday morning. The work will be led by Texas State University professor Robert Mace, executive director and chief water policy officer at The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University.

Mace called the funding “transformational” for the center, which serves as a hub of water research and preservation in the state.Sign up to receive The Daily Reach every morning.Whoops! There was an error and we couldn't process your subscription. Please reload the page and try again.
