“I write today as someone who himself realizes the shame that has come upon our Church due to the sexual abuse of minors.'
Facing public pressure, the Archdiocese of New York released on Friday a staggering list of more than 100 priests and deacons who were “credibly accused” of sexually abusing minors or of possessing child pornography.
None of the people listed in the disclosure are still working in the ministry, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said in a letter that accompanied the release. He explained that the list was published at the request of survivors and victims as well as the general public. The Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, more commonly known as “SNAP,” issued a statement saying it was “grateful” for the release. The hope, the group said, is that such disclosures will encourage survivors to come forward with their claims and make reports to authorities.
“Only by knowing what went wrong to enable abusers in the past can we best know how to prevent similar situations in the future,” the statement continued.
