Chuck Wexler, the executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, an independent research organization, said officer suicide is"the number one issue for police departments around the country." The spate of officer suicides has prompted O'Neill and NYPD Chief of Department Terrence Monahan to convene mental health experts. They’re considering putting peer counselors and clinicians in each precinct.
A recent white paper commissioned by the Ruderman Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization, found that police officers and firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.
