New York City’s next police commissioner is a Queens-raised son of Irish immigrants who has worked as a plainclothes narcotics officer and as the New York Police Department’s chief of detectives, championing data-driven crime-fighting.
Dermot Shea, 50 years old, will take the reins Dec. 1. His promotion to lead the nation’s largest police force was announced Monday. The outgoing commissioner, James O’Neill, said he planned to step down and work in the private sector.
