A New York State judge on Wednesday rejected a police union request to temporarily halt New York City’s stringent vaccine mandate for the city’s municipal workforce, which means that workers who do not comply with the mandate by the end of this week will be put on unpaid leave.Getty ImagesIn her ruling, Judge Lizette Colon said the mandate can go into effect as scheduled on Monday but city officials will need to appear in court to defend the requirement against the police union lawsuit.
The decision means police officers, firefighters and most other city workers will have to show proof that they have received at least one vaccine dose by 5 pm Friday or they will be put on unpaid leave starting Monday. Applications for medical or religious exemptions were due on Wednesday, and workers who have applied for them will be allowed to work with weekly testing while their requests are considered.
