The recommendations come as families of the 20 people killed in the crash continued to struggle with the unfathomable tragedy, the nation's worst transportation accident in a decade.
David RobinsonALBANY, N.Y. – Federal investigators issued new safety recommendations seeking to improve the dangerous seating issues connected to the Schoharie County limo crash that killed 20 people last year.
Families of those killed in the crash continued to struggle with the tragedy – the nation's worst transportation accident in a decade.Because lap/shoulder belts provide a greater level of occupant protection than lap belts, lap/shoulder belts should be installed as standard equipment for all passenger seating positions in limousines.
"After the Schoharie crash, NTSB investigators had to remove the bench seats to gain access to the seat belts," the report noted, adding evidence indicated none of the 17 passengers were wearing the available seat belts at the time of the crash. The safety report calls on state and federal lawmakers to reform laws and regulations related to limo safety.Require lap/shoulder belts for each passenger seating position on all new vehicles modified to be used as limousines.
