New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has notified New Yorkers that officers can now dispense fines for not complying with social distancing measures
... [+]Noam Galai/Getty ImagesNew York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New Yorkers congregating in public who fail to adhere to officers’ orders to disperse will be subject to fines between $250 and $500 for non-compliance with social distancing.
“If anyone doesn’t listen, then they deserve a fine at this point,” de Blasio said on Sunday night. “I don’t want to fine people when so many folks are going through economic distress, but if they haven’t gotten the message by now, and they don’t get the message when an enforcement officer’s staring them in the face—that person then deserves the fine.”
Social distancing, which President Trump defines as the absence of group gatherings and closure of non-essential businesses, is the national mandate until April 30, at a minimum. This policy applies to two or more people congregating in public—with no specifics on distance between persons. The city has become a global center of the coronavirus pandemic with over 32,000 cases and 776 deaths.
