City says new crime victims' rights law forces its hand.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus Dispatch sued the city of Columbus over the police department’s refusal to reveal the identity of police officers who kill citizens in the line of duty using a state constitutional provision that voters approved in 2017., the Columbus Division of Police began has said officers who shoot and kill people are “victims” whose identities are protected.
“A lot of the law enforcement agencies, they don’t know exactly what their obligations are under Marsy’s Law,” she said. “So the easiest thing to do is keep it all redacted. I’m glad to see the Dispatch is challenging this.” Secondly, the paper argued, even if police who kill are “victims,” withholding their identities violates basic rights in the Ohio Constitution of free speech and petitioning the government over grievances.
