We fully expect the Los Angeles Chargers to trade Melvin Gordon. Here are five likely landing spots, the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers included.
The Los Angeles Chargers are slated to start their regular season schedule Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. They’ll do so without Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon,Gordon, 26, is looking for an extension that would make him one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL. In turn, the Chargers have granted the two-time Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade.
This fit makes even more sense when we consider that the Ravens have a run-first quarterback in Lamar Jackson. Just imagine how electric that backfield would be. From a financial perspective, Baltimore can surely afford to pay Gordon’s asking price with Jackson still playing under his rookie deal. The young quarterback is set to count a combined $4 million against the cap over the next three seasons.Melvin Gordon is precisely what Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers want in a running back.
Speaking of the GM, Gutekunst was much more active adding outside options in his first two offseasons than the man he replaced, Ted Thompson. Gordon would be his biggest get thus far. Maybe offer up Jones for Gordon straight up. Williams and a mid-round pick could work, too.Simply put, Marcus Mariota needs a star running back to help him after struggling through the past two seasons.
