Perhaps the reason why Jaar seems shrouded in mystery is because he’s created an ecosystem in which Nicolás Jaar is less its center than one active part of a thriving, multivalent world. On, this theory comes to life as Jaar pulls from all sides of his portfolio to present a stunning and bold work that moves from near-ambient musings to free jazz experiments to drum-heavy pop compositions.
The first few tracks on the album are mere place setters. You can almost hear the gears churning and the plots being charted, like an avant-space orchestra tuning for a performance. The album moves in placid yet haunted quiet until “Agosto,” in which Jaar utilizes hollow woodwinds and a plethora of noises; it’s more landscape composition than song, but the loping melody of the clarinet gives the song some tangibility and weightiness.
“Gocce” follows a slow-rhythmed group of chords toward a vacuumed-piano line, so clean in sound as to have been recorded in the silent atmosphere of another galaxy. These small movements lead to “Mud,” the album’s centerpiece and one of Jaar’s strongest compositions to date. It’s BPM is a bit faster than “Gocce,” but uses a paper-thin floor tom to pace Jaar’s longing vocals.
Elsewhere, Jaar blends spoken-word delivery with the ecstasy-bounce of disco synth lines, though he separates the instrument from its dancefloor context, giving it a shapeless feel. “Garden” features little else besides gorgeous piano melodies stacked atop each other less in conversation than as distinct entities speaking one language.
