Producers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri are optimistic about the future of their partnership following the release of the new film, giving more details on their plans in a recent interview. Featuring a star-studded voice cast of actors like Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen, Jack Black, and Anya Taylor-Joy, the video game-inspired film released this week.

However, since its release the film has seen great commercial success, highly increasing the likelihood of a second entry in the franchise, or potentially even new spin-off titles.
Shigeru Miyamoto: There's nothing I can really comment on at the moment. But we started with the fact that we have a shared vision of creation, so I think there'll be opportunities in the future. Chris Meladandri: We are so focused right now on this movie, all the way up to Wednesday, and how the audience engages with the film. Nintendo and Illumination have had a really rewarding collaboration. Mr. Miyamoto and his colleagues have invited me to join the board of directors of Nintendo, and we're working together into the future with me in that capacity. But it's hard for us to talk about anything else at this time.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie only just releasing this week, it's far too early to speak on a new film with any sort of certainty. However, it's clear from the interview that the partnership between Nintendo and Illumination is far from over, which bodes well for the future. Whether their next film is a direct sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie or an entirely new Nintendo IP, fans can certainly expect to see more in the years to come.
