Let's look at who the top-rated teams are heading into the season -- and how to find this year's power points for State Tournament qualification

The formula is complex, but at its most basic level, the power points are calculated based on the average of a team’s 10 best-scoring power point matches. Teams are required to wrestle at least 10 dual-matches against NJSIAA-member schools by the cutoff to be eligible for the state tournament, which will be seeded on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
NJ.com’s power points system will use the exact same algorithm to calculate the power points this year, as in the past - but with an important change: daily updates. The end result at the seeding cutoff will be exactly the same, but in the past, the calculations were published weekly. This year, a calculation will happen every morning, giving the wrestling community a more real-time view of the rankings.
The first step in the power points process each wrestling season is a preseason ranking formula that identifies the top 15 teams in every geographic section and assigns teams a value - 32 points for the top team, decreasing by 0.5 points for each place until the No. 15 team receives 25 points. Every other un-ranked team in each section will start the season just below, with 23 points.
