Dwyer, Heil lead Minutemen to first sectional crown since 2018
They wanted a chance to play in front of large, enthusiastic crowds that included their friends. They were looking to compete on the same side for once, instead of going against each other like they had for so long. And, most of all, they hoped to become champions.
That call surely changed the complexion of the game, but no matter what Dwyer and Heil were going to be a handful to contend with. The former academy players came out for Washington Township this year — for Heil, it was a return to the program, and for Dwyer it was his first time — and they got to raise the sectional trophy together.
“All I can say is that I’m really happy he came back and I look forward to hopefully winning these next two games with him,” Dwyer said. “We always played against each other . We played each other in the state championship and I got that win. But we always went back and forth growing up and it’s always been a great experience playing against him. He’s a great player and it’s fun playing with him.”
Vivilo made a diving save on Heil’s ensuing PK, but less than a minute later Heil overcame the disappointment, threaded a beautiful pass to Dwyer streaking up the middle of the field, and it was 2-0. “Well … we taped it and we’ll look at it. There’s nothing you can say now. … It a yellow and a penalty kick, so maybe we’re down 2-0 but we still have 11 men. I felt like after that, I’m down, I have to adjust my whole lineup, you’re taking one of my best players off the field. It’s like, come on man, give us a chance. We worked so hard, we’ve been working since Aug. 19 to get here.”
