Astros will start season with all-righthanded bullpen
Righthander Ronel Blanco has had an impressive spring for the Astros, posting a 0.64 ERA in 17 Grapefruit League innings.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Length bested lefthandedness and all but cemented the Astros’ opening day bullpen, a group missing the one piece Dusty Baker always prefers.
Baker has softened his stance on lefthanded relievers since his Houston tenure began. Earlier this spring, he acknowledged the silliness of carrying a southpaw just for show. Last season, Baker’s bullpen received just 45⅓ innings from lefthanders — the fewest of any relief corps in baseball. Yet in February, Dana Brown took the unusual step of giving Gage a $125,000 signing bonus before claiming him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, indicating how highly Houston’s first-year general manager valued him. Brown seemed bullish recently on Gage’s candidacy for the opening day bullpen.
