Sargassum can have a positive effect on beaches, where it can trap sand and fortify areas...
Beach goers walk along the beach near Galvestonâs Pleasure Pier on Monday, March 6, 2023 in Galveson.Even though it shares its name with the horror movie The Blob, Texans have nothing to fear when it comes to the possibility of yet another"Summer of Seaweed" in Galveston.
A 5,000-mile-wide blob of sargassum is making its way through the Caribbean, and some of it could end up on Galveston beaches later this year, according to Anna Armitage, a professor of marine biology at Texas A&M University in Galveston. But prospective beach-goers and nearby residents have no need to fear, despite recent television reports exaggerating the issue – the bloom actually could help make the beach healthier, Armitage explained.
"I hated the smell," Rowe said at the time."The smell was nauseating. Kind of an organic thing, not like dead fish, not like rotten egg, something else about it."Offshore, the rafts provide a habitat for many fish species, Armitage said. While this particular patch is large, similarly large patches have been detected off the U.S. coast several times over the last decade, Armitage said.
And if that doesn't assuage fears enough, there's one more silver lining in this particular seaweed blob: The majority of the bloom appears on course to end up in Florida rather than Texas.

DeSantis seeks federal aid for Fort Lauderdale flood victimsFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis will ask the Biden administration to declare Broward County a disaster area due to flooding earlier this month after record rainfall. The declaration would make Broward residents who incurred damage to their homes and other property eligible for a wide range of assistance. Local governments would also be eligible. More than 2 feet of rain fell in some parts of Fort Lauderdale on April 12. That was a 1-in-a-1,000-year deluge. It left some parts of the county with up to 3 feet of water. About 1,000 homes were severely damaged. The flooding also closed the airport for almost two days.
