The film, directed by Mobile native Margaret Brown and co-written with University of South Alabama folklorist Kern Jackson, was on an Oscar shortlist announced in late December.

“Descendant,” the documentary telling the unique story of Alabama’s Africatown community, has racked up many honors – but a nomination for the Oscar for best documentary feature isn’t among them.

Nominees were announced Tuesday morning. The five nominees in the documentary feature category are “All That Breathes,” “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” “Fire of Love,” “A House Made of Splinters” and “Navalny.”, “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” led with the most nominations overall. Earlier this month, the campaign led to some significant meetings in Washington, D.C.: Members of the White House Council on Environmental Quality met with descendants of Clotilda survivors, and an EPA regional administrator introduced a descendant panel discussion at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History.
