Carolyn Bertozzi discusses her career, her band with Tom Morello and the award that...
Between the early morning phone call in October alerting Dr. Carolyn R. Bertozzi to her selection for a Nobel Prize and her visit this month to Stockholm to receive that honor, the inventor of bioorthogonal chemistry traveled to Houston. The global renown of the Nobel Prize is difficult to place into a shadow. But Bertozzi at the time spoke reverently about the Robert A. Welch Award.
She hopes there’s also practical medical applications for this beautiful, fascinating and elegant work.Bertozzi grew up in Boston, one of three daughters whose father was a physicist. “Scientists don’t get noticed much for what we do,” she says. “We’re kind of behind the scenes in life. By contrast, rock stars are more noticeable. So any time a rock star can cast a beam on a scientist, even a little beam, that’s helpful for us.”
Bertozzi says “their investment in chemistry puts them squarely at the top of the profession.” She talks about colleagues and former trainees, who have pursued their ideas through Welch grants. Bertozzi suggests it’d be nearly impossible to track the reach of the work facilitated through the organization’s grants, which are rooted in Texas, but provide a platform for researchers whose work takes them to other places.
