Riot Games announced a slew of new format changes for its North American esports league, including two premier Monday night games and a RedZone-esque broadcast for its lower-tiered Academy league.
While Saturdays and Sundays will still feature the majority of the LCS games—four matches plus an Academy tilt—Monday nights will now feature two"marquee match-ups," with three Academy games serving as a pre-game. Riot will also now broadcast Academy Rush on Fridays, which will feature the casting team jumping between four simultaneously played Academy games à la NFL RedZone, concluding with a full fifth game.
Riot is also adjusting the format for its Spring Split playoffs: instead of doling out points that go toward a regional qualifying tournament for the year-ending World Championships, the spring playoffs will only determine who plays in the international Mid-Season Invitational. Doing away with the regional qualifying tournament, Riot will expand the summer playoffs: the top eight out of ten teams from the regular season qualify, with the top three teams moving on to the World Championships.Key Background:
