The district on Tuesday officially named offensive coordinator Willie Gaston as the replacement for Jon Kay,Gaston, a North Shore alum, was an assistant during all four of the Mustangs’ state championship victories under Kay , who departs after nine seasons and a 117-18 overall record. “I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Gaston said in a Galena Park ISD press release. “It’s an honor to be able to give back to the eastside community and coach where I played as a student-athlete. I can’t wait to work with the kids and see just how much further we can grow as a team.”
Gaston was a standout quarterback for North Shore and graduated in 2002 with a 25-3 record as a starter under head coach David Aymond. He went on to play cornerback at the University of Houston and signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He returned to North Shore as a PE teacher and freshman football coach in 2008.
“Without a doubt, Willie Gaston will serve our students and community well,” GPISD superintendent John C. Moore Jr. said. “Galena Park ISD is proud and honored to select not only a great coach, but one who grew up and played in our community. I have had the pleasure of watching him perform both as an outstanding student athlete and as an integral part of the North Shore coaching squad for the last 15 years.
