Two women in North Texas left their home country for new opportunities long before the war in Ukraine began in 2022, but their families are still there.

Niewiadomski had plans to visit her family once COVID restrictions were lifted, so they could meet her husband. She got married during the pandemic and her parents watched via FaceTime. For the last year, she has been gathering items for family and friends back in Ukraine. Niewiadomski ships flashlights, first aid kits, and other useful items. The mail overseas is not a fast process, and packages can take up to two weeks to arrive.
“People rebelled and came out on streets and squares,” Jacobs said. “They started shooting people in the square and over 100 people died in just those peaceful protests.” “We mobilized immediately,” Jacobs said. “The only thing we could do from here is trying to help. And that’s what we did, but it also helped us to deal with the stress and the bad news, because it’s easier when you’re together with someone who is feeling the same way.”
