Nurses Fara Ajani, associate manager in medicine services, peeks through the window of a patient room while making rounds in the COVID-19 unit at Parkland Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, in Dallas. The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 decreased by 49 in North Texas over the last 24 hours, but health experts say it’s too soon to tell whether that downward trend will continue.

While experts originally projected that hospitalizations would surpass those seen in previous surges, now they’re not so sure. Hospitalizations could climb or fall in coming days, although that doesn’t change the fact that hospitals are under great strain with the omicron variant, said Dr. Philip Huang, director of the Dallas County Health and Human Services.

While it hasn’t broken hospitalization records, the highly-contagious omicron variant already shattered previous daily COVID-19 infection records. More than 500,000 people in Dallas County have contracted the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. Researchers at UT Southwestern released an updated COVID-19 forecast Wednesday, lowering the number of hospitalizations and daily new cases expected at omicron’s peak compared to previous projections.

Hospitalizations, which tend to lag a week or two after new coronavirus infections, are expected to peak at around 1,500 patients in Dallas County, down from 2,000 in previous projections. Tarrant County’s COVID-19 hospitalizations could exceed 1,700, down from 2,500. The latest UTSW forecast attributed some of its new projections to an increase in masking over the last week.
