March is typically when flu season is ending. This year, the flu is not ready to go away. It’s a likely result of demasking and the vaccine this year being less effective.
Dr. Alice Phillips with Cook Children's Pediatrics Cityview says the flu virus is behaving differently this year. "That is a good question," she said. "Why did RSV happen in the middle of summer? Are we going to see a new seasonality to our illnesses as we exit the pandemic, or will we be back into our typical seasons? It remains to be seen.
"I'm getting a lot of patients coming in, and their child has been sick two, three times in a row in the past month, and they are worried. And I say this is to be expected," she said. "We saw next to zero flu last year because masking did work," she said. "This year, we have a lower percentage that had it last year. So they are more at risk this year."
