Milton Zuzun Tax, 18, is accused in the death of 49-year-old Jose Gonzalez, who was stabbed 20 times
When Jose Gonzalez disappeared during a short hike last week, his worried family spent three days searching for him. On Sunday, as Jorge Gonzalez drove around desperately searching, he got the call. His brother’s body had been found. On Wednesday, the suspect, Milton Zuzan Tax, 18, pleaded not guilty to murder in Gonzalez’s death. Prosecutors say the two men did not know each other before their encounter in Otay Valley Regional Park.
The prosecutor said detectives believe Gonzalez and Tax came across each other at the park, then Tax went to the nearby home where he had recently been staying and returned with a knife. The complaint filed by prosecutors doesn’t give an exact date for the attack, only that it happened sometime between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28, the day his family found him.
On Friday, his mother and sister scoured the trails, growing more deeply concerned. Another brother also went out to search. By the end of the day, his sister called police to report him missing.
