Girls volleyball notebook: Jon Dazé has introduced a competitive system in practices that rewards working hard and competing. Plus, Taft earns big in league opener.
Notre Dame girls volleyball players are striving for a gold medal every day.
“And so the reward is showing your team that you can compete and you find yourself playing more,” Dazé said. “If you’re someone that’s constantly working hard and competing, then you’ve gotta be on the court.” Notre Dame is the first high school head coaching job that Dazé has had since helming Marlborough two years ago. He also brings a wealth of club volleyball coaching experience as well as beach volleyball. Dazé was an assistant coach for beach volleyball’s Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, where the duo won bronze.
“We haven’t been 100% healthy for a couple weeks,” Dazé said. “Obviously the results aren’t what you would hope to have, but its cool to see them try to push their way through it. I think the team is really buying in. We’re just a little banged up right now.” The Knights also lost a setter due to concussion protocol, which forced Notre Dame to move from a 6-2 offense that includes two setters to a 5-1 offense with just one setter. Setter Bella Richards has gone from sharing responsibilities with another player to being the lone setter on the court, taking on an increased blocking role as a result.
