Nov. 2022 Election: San Diego Measure U would hurt most vulnerable, add to school district's debt [Opinion]
1. The San Diego Unified School District wants another $3.2 billion, which, with interest, would add anto the approximately $19 billion that homeowners and renters are already on the hook for in coming decades. The total cost of these bonds will raise community payback to over $26 billion — and for what? The Measure U project callouts are eerily familiar to previous bond projects that were never funded, with earlier bond funds diverted to other projects.
4. The district is planning on using about the same amount of money for real estate development as school security, on the belief that everybody in the district should be forced to subsidize district housing. This measure should be called the “employee housing measure,” once againthat the district is playing on the public’s emotions to subsidize its own adult-oriented priorities and that security — both past and present — is not a priority issue.
a. This bond is paid for by property taxes, and it’s estimated the property tax costs will be $7.3 billion — period.
