“That unit has struggled most of the year, and I take responsibility for that,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “Not finding a way to get those guys to play together, to play the right way, and most importantly, just to have some success.”

Hyland, who played five minutes total and not once in the second half, was going for a piece of candy.Denver’s 121-106 lossAlvarado torched whichever defender the Nuggets tried on him for a career-high 38 points, including eight 3-pointers, and was largely responsible for the glaring bench disparity in the loss. New Orleans’ reserves outscored Denver’s 62-18. Nobody on Denver’s bench scored in the third quarter. Of the eight points they managed in the fourth quarter, the majority were academic.

The truth is that Denver’s bench — Hyland, Smith, Vlatko Cancar, DeAndre Jordan and Davon Reed — was largely ineffective, whether Alvarado had turned Smoothie King Center into his own personal playground or not. Some of Denver’s rotation issues will be solved when Michael Porter Jr. returns from a heel injury that’s robbed him of the last six games. His return should result in Bruce Brown slotting back with the second unit, where he can score, facilitate and defend, perhaps galvanizing a group that’s still searching for an identity.Jeff Green’s return from a knee injury appears imminent, and he could be back as early as Tuesday against Dallas.
